If I cover up this part, can you say what those two letters sound like? Small. Small. Peggy: Sma– Bob: Beautiful. You’re getting so good at this. It’s fantastic. That’s why I wanted to do this experiment this morning because you’re getting so good at it. Now, what do we have going on here? Peggy: All, Fall (?). We all play ball. Bob: Okay, I’ll buy that. Which word says play? Peggy: All. Bob: Which word says play? How do you know that? Peggy: Because it begins with a “p”. |
Episode B: |
Bob: Okay. Next page. You’re doing so good. Peggy: What about this? Bob: What about it? Go ahead. Peggy: Wall, wall. Bob: Can you point to the words as you read this? Peggy: Up on a wall. Bob: That’s a bizarre picture, isn’t it? Peggy: That must be tricky. Bob: It must be very hard to do that. I would say so. Now, do you remember what happens? Can you say what happens on the next page? Peggy: Yeah. Bob: Yeah? What happens? Can you tell me what happens in the picture and what it says? Peggy: Well, it says, We play all day. We fight all night. Bob: [turning the next page] Surprise. |
Episode C: |
Bob: [to Katie] Katie, I don’t want you standing up here now. Come over to this side. Peggy: All Fall. Fall off the wall, Bob: Can you go under Katie? [camera cable?] That’s a good girl. Bob: [back to Peggy again] Now, I’m sorry, I missed that thing. I was a little distracted. Peggy: All Fall, Fall off the wall. Bob: Well, which word says off? Okay, fine. Peggy: But isn’t that guy a little puzzled? Bob: He sure does. He does. Bob: Now, what’s it saying on the next page? You’re willing to make a guess? – |
Episode D: |
Peggy: We play all day. We fight all night. Bob: So you know that very well. Peggy: See? [I was right] Bob: Which word says fight? Now, let me ask you something. How did you figure that out? Well, last night when we were reading this, you had forgotten what these meant. You said to me you didn’t know how to read those words. You asked me and I said, “That word is night.” You said, “Oh, fight.” Then you read the others. Peggy: Day, play. We, play all day. Night, fight. We, fight all night. Bob: Can I ask you a really hard question now? Peggy: What? Bob: You see this word play? Bob: Yeah. Peggy: If we took the L out of there. Peggy: Pleh – Peggy: [repeated by Peggy, or mimiced by Katie] Peggy: That’s not it. Bob: Not bad. Peggy: Good. Bob: Now, Katie, quit looking at Katie. Katie, you quit giggling too. Peggy: Pay. Bob: What was that again? Say it again, louder. I’m sure you were right. Pay. Pay or pale? Peggy: Pale, I think. Bob: Well, that’s very good. The word would be pay without the L, but if you put the L on the end, so it If it would be pale. Very good. Very good. That’s impressive. |
Episode E: |
Bob: [turning a page] Now, I remember this. Peggy: This is- He, Me. He is after me. Bob: Which word says “af”? Which one says ter? Bob: [Peggy point at the second syllable, “ter”]. Bob: Ter. What’s the matter? Did I ask a tricky question? No? No? [as Peggy shakes her head in the negative]. |
