Episode A: | Mom: Here, Peggy. Bob: [a blanket, covering a mirror behind Peggy, falls] You’re not supposed to notice that, Peg. (Intention had been to prevent her distraction) Oh, well. Mom: Peggy. Bob: Guess you got us foxed out on that one, huh, Peggy? Mom: Mm-mm. [unclear comment about infant food]. Bob: Okay, you’re giving her a little liquid food now. Mom: Well, it’s all strained food, not really liquid. Bob: But the idea: that is something that she won’t be picking out of her mouth. {Mom: No} because what you’re going to do next is give her something that she’ll probably start to pick out of her mouth. Let’s see what impact that has on what finger she points with. [tricycle bell rings in background] Mom: Would you like a piece of cheese?… She took it in her fingers here and is now eating it. [index finger extended alone] Bob: Okay. Mom: She shoved it in with the index finger. Bob: Now, that’s the situation in which we’ve- Mom: Now, she’s reaching with the same two fingers again to take it out. |
Episode B: | Mom: Don’t you like cheese? Everybody else does. I bet even Scurry would if we let her have it. Bob: But the whole point is there, that she was doing something with that finger, and okay, now she’s coming back to her normal pattern. But when she picks food out of her mouth, she seems to come back to using a single finger. There we go. Mom: You like that cheese, huh? {P: “Mm”} “Mm” is that good? … You’re not going to pick it out, huh? Bob: Well, what else would she be inclined to pick out of her mouth? You got one finger in there or two? That’s one again. [Peggy pushes a crumb on table with finger, then puts it into mouth] Mom: Well, she inclines to do this with any solid, lumpy, grown-up food that you feed her after she’s had enough and she starts getting…[background noise] Bob: Well, could it be that she hasn’t had enough to eat? Mom: It could be. [feeds Peggy another chunk of cheese; Peggy chews the food then starts clapping] And clap, clap, clap, clap, clap Bob: Am I supposed to do that, too, Peg? [clapping] Is that right? |
Episode C: | Mom: [feeds another bit of cheese] Well, you found a little piece of cheese. Bob: Okay, how’s she going to pick that up now? One finger and thumb? Mom: The fore finger. Bob: Do you recall, Gretchen, whether a couple of weeks ago, she typically picked things up with two fingers or with one finger? Mom: She typically tried to pick it up with her entire fist. Bob: Even a very small thing? Mom: Yeah, she tried to pick it up with her fist and then try to put it into her mouth like that. And then that result, that she got very little into her mouth when she tried to do something like that. And a little baby piece. [more cheese] She’s looking for more. Bob: Why don’t you just put it — stuffed in with two fingers? Okay, why don’t you just put a chunk down right in the middle of the tray? That was the last chunk. Aha. All right. Mom: I can go cut some more, though. Bob: Well, it looks like she’d like more. Let me stop the camera. You go get some more cheese for her. Hold on, Peg. Mom will be back in a little bit.[break in video] [Restarting] I started it up a little earlier. You can walk right across. Don’t worry about that. [clip ends] |
