Speech Codes (Prelminary Notes for later development)
My intentions is to keep this as simple as possible.
In the first two posts, the initial objective has been to introduce people, even when the speech is pre-verbal and showing little structure, if any. The codes used in posts withScurry and withRobby have been ad hoc place holders adopted in the process of creating transcripts. But the representational biases shown in them will remain.
1. minimize unusual schemes (the codes should be familiar in appearance and obvious in meaning)
2. the codes should be open to changes reflecting progress in speech production mastery.
My intention is to make use of Wikipedia’s Pronunciatiion Respelling Key and other Ad Hoc symbol strings, to wit:
NVE => Non verbal exclamation
UMS => Unclear monosyllable utterance
UPS => Unclear polysyllable utterance
~ => “sounds like this English verbal form to me.” This need not imply Peggy means that, but she may.
= => “I think she means this English word or phrase.” (Used sparingly, only when it is an issue.)
The scheme will doubtless change as I engage in analysis of speech production development and its relation to signification.
