Analysis: Mastery of the Ring Tower Puzzle

The Ring Tower Puzzle was a member of the set of Standard Objects. The base supports an upright pole onto which six plastic rings are placed. In the original form the upright is a cone of diameter decreasing with height. It is a puzzle for an infant because she must choose the 6 rings for placement in order of decreasing hole diameter for the set to fit on the upright.
This case study analysis was constructed in reverse chronological order, beginning from the Infant Peggy’s mastery of the puzzle to the earliest records that inform us how her specific ability to meet the challenge developed. This object-focused thread is composed of 3 strands. Knowing how this story ends and the paths from its beginning, we can tease out of this case what was learned and what skills were mastered along the way; such is the intention of the analysis here.

This page can serve as an index to vignettes, video clips (and clipNotes as available) for each episode where Peggy played with the Ring Tower and/or its rings individually. This list has been built from the theme-column entries in the video index beginning at P157, working back in time to P18, by examining each clip noted as involving the standard objects or the ring tower specifically. Before clipNotes are available (and after also) video clips may be played from the Panels (and enlarged to full screen by the toggle button in the upper right corner of the clip window).
