Bob Okay, here’s the six. Peggy One, two, three, four, five, six. Bob Well, you have to put in the other five. Peggy One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10. Peggy Wait a minute.. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11. Bob Beautiful. Peggy And two ones. |

Bob If you could borrow my hands again, could you solve any harder problems? Peggy Maybe. Because I don’t have just as many fing — Yes, I do. Bob We both have the same number of fingers, right? But now, think about this. Peggy Eight fingers. Bob If you think of one hand of yours and two hands of mine. We have a lot of fingers. Peggy One, two, three, four, five, six. Bob Don’t you count your thumb, too? I’ll tell you what, you keep this hand for counting and this hand for fingers, and use all my fingers, too. Peggy Okay. I’ll keep this hand for just looking at. |

Bob Yes. I’ll give you a real hard problem then. You ready for a real hard problem? Peggy I don’t know. Bob Well, let’s see. Remember you said those black ones were too tough? Well, maybe not. That would say eight- . MomKatie, come back. Bob Plus five. Mom you’re in the way, sweetheart. Peggy Let me use your fingers. Bob Right. I’ll let you use my fingers. Now, I’ll make the eight with my fingers. Okay, and you make five with yours. Peggy Five. Okay. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, five, 10, 11, 12, 13. Thirteen. Then three and a one. Bob If you have friends, that’s a good trick for solving hard problems, right? |

Peggy Hey, dad, Katie can sit in your lap now. Bob (to Katie) Are you all finished, sweetheart? Okay, you put that down then wipe your hands real good. Then come sit in my lap. (to Peggy) We’ll have to do this very carefully because I’m going to need all these fingers if we’re doing such hard problems. Well, now look, you did 8 plus 5 equals 13. Peggy Yeah. Bob Do you know any other good problems? Peggy I’m going to try to make you do this. Bob Oh, dear. You’re making problems for me? (Peggy puts up a four.) Four. Four plus nine. Are you gonna let me use any of your fingers? ( Peggy holds up ten fingers.) Well, I’ll tell you what, you fold down this thumb, and I won’t count that. Now, how many fingers have you got? Okay, how many fingers are you holding up now? Peggy Nine. Bob Okay, so you’ve got the nine. That’s you. I’ve got four fingers here. Watch. Watch this very closely. You’ve got nine. Put them down. I won’t even count’em. I’ll just say nine. You’re watching? Nine, 10, 11, 12, 13. Is that right? Peggy (Peggy puts up a 3 first and a 1 after, laughing.) It’s thirty one. Bob Yeah, wow. But 9 plus 4 is 13. |
