| Why should I be a subscriber? I can read whatever I want. I can search your content for text-strings or with tags. | Sound question. NLCSA uses WordPress for BOTH content management of research materials and to enhance communication with others about these studies and about the case study method more generally. As a subscriber, you can log in and use the comment facility without having to enter name and email address for each comment. More importantly, if your profile informs us of your interests, we might be able to recommend some materials as relevant for you. |
| If I want to change my subscriber name, can I? | WordPress does not permit a subscription-name to be changed, but we’d be willing to open a second subscription, though it would lead to administrative clutter. Please think carefully about your subscriber name when signing up. |

| I’ve looked at some of these materials, and might like to use your archive with my group. How do I get to be a contributor? Or should I be an author? | Send a message to the Analyst, RWLawler@nlcsa.net, stating your intentions, the rough number of people comprising your group, and the density of interactions you expect. As contributor or author, you might compose a post with links to documents you suggest and comments about them. Your colleagues could then use the comment facility to express their reactions and thoughts. I’m certain the Analyst would concur this is one use NLCSA is designed for. I would recommend you start as a contributor; in that role, your posts would come to the administration (me, “admin”) which would permit hints on use or any suggestions before my approving your post for publication. When you are comfortable using the facilities, ask for your role to be changed to Author, and I’ll be happy to make the change that will permit publication without review. |
| Can you step me through creating a new post? | Sure. Let’s assume you are defined as a contributor. At the upper right, click on “Login.” After you enter your login ID and password, you will be taken “back stage” — this is where you do all the editing of your post. In the left sidebar (backstage), at the heading “posts” select the sub-heading “Add New.” This is your new post, to which you should now give a title. (Think first; avoid changes if possible.) In the central screen, you can type or paste whatever you want by way of introduction for your group. In the right margin, you should click on the button “save draft.” Good start! Look under the heading “Edit post” If you click on “view post,” you will see the start of your post. To return to editing your new post, click on the edit link underneath your displayed post…. You’re backstage again. |
| I created an archive, copied it, and pasted it into my post, but the links no longer work. Am I doing something wrong? | No (but see example2 under the Research heading in the right sidebar). When archives are copied and pasted into posts, they transfer as text. Selecting, cutting, and pasting text into a post will work for simple texts, but links to images, video, hyperlinks, and tags will be lost. Consider the method available to Editors. |

| The Main Idea | The objective is to produce a collection of related materials, a “data-slice” through the corpora, for examination and discussion. The archived sources are embedded in a “Content Management System.” Since the materials are connected in different ways, it is essential to preserve the linked tags when one takes a data-slice through the corpora and proposes it as a nexus for exploration and discussion. |
| What do I have to do to become an editor? | You need to discuss it with the Analyst and me (Admin). Editing those archived documents is currently reserved to the Analyst, Builder, and Admin. But we are looking for interested colleagues and will make the time to establish new initiatives. |
| Suppose I am an editor, what exactly would I do? | When your access is established, Admin will set up for you an entry under the “Editors” horizontal menu. RWLawler is an example you can examine. But first, see the samples of archives created by search “RWLsearchCuldy,” and by tag selection “RWLtagQ17.” (The examples were chosen because they return minimal archives.) HERE is how to make a post with linked data. First create the data-slice on any page showing the left sidebar. In the editor’s menu, select and click on your own name. (Once you have an editor’s access, you will also have a template installed there.) — for now use RWLawler. This will create a “page within the page” where you can re-create your search or tag selection. On the “page within the page” create again the archive you want to include in your post. Next, in the toolbar of “the outside page,” in the edit-page menu select the command “copy to a new draft.” Your Archive will now be the body of your new draft post, with all links intact. You will edit your draft, “backstage,” where you will provide a name for the new post. I recommend that you key the name in the title field then copy and paste that name into the permalink filename. Now is the one bit of “coding” you need to do: in the custom field under the text window, you will see in the If your archive was created by a tag, replace the string “???” with the tag you selected, and then click the update button for the field, put a check mark below in the box to allow comments, then click the update button in the Publish (right) column. As you choose, you may add any introduction or concluding comments before and after the archive. If your archive was created by a search, in the string “tag/???/” replace it with the string “?s=your-literal-key” and then click the update button for the field, put a check mark below in the box to allow comments, then click the update button in the Publish column. You can view the post directly. Your post will be accessible generally by clicking on its name under the Editors menu. |
